Unit 8 assignment
Current Trend in Exercise and Fitness-Aging Well Across the Life Span was a class that taught me not just about physical fitness, but how each age group develops and what they need to be healthy. In the eighth unit, I made an exercise prescription for a case study named Carl, as well as outlining my exercise regimen. Exercise as medicine can be used for any age group in any culture. While it may look different for everyone, physical fitness is something that we all need.
Supplements for depression
HW-499 Unit 4 PowerPoint Presentation
There are many supplements out there for sale. Some of them can be used for depression. In this presentation I go over four supplements that have been linked with relieving symptoms of depression. The four I present on are Saffron, Omega-three fatty acids, SAM-e, and ST. John’s Wort.
Three Day Relaxation Course
This fictional course was an assignment that I created for a strass management class. Stress management is something that counselors teach their clients how to do. This course has a syllabus, handouts, and a slideshow with lecture notes.
diaphragmatic breathing presentation
This class presents what diaphragmatic breathing is and why it is important. There are many benefits to it. It can be a great technique to use to calm oneself down anywhere and at anytime.
PROGRESSIVE MUSCLE RELAXATION
PMR is a relaxation technique that can be done by anyone and just about anywhere. It has many benefits. It is best when you have at least 10-20 minutes to devote to it.
Tai Chi
This class gives a brief overview of what Tai Chi is, how it has developed, and how to practice it. It can be done as an individual or in a group. It is more popular among older adults because of its low-impact.
HW-499 Unit 5 Tai Chi Assignment
Diet and nutrition
Diet and nutrition are related to mental health. The relationship of the brain and the second brain (the gut) are closely related. Knowing more about how this affects people and their mental health are helpful.
There were many topics that were covered in this class. The three that stood out the most to me were the politics behind food, the globalization of fast food, and weight loss drugs. Here I have listed three resources as a jumping off point for each topic.
the politics behind food
Open Secrets is a good website to see how much lobbying goes into the food industry.
The Meat Lobby is an interesting French documentary on sodium nitrates and the lengths the government will go to cover it up.
Food and politics are closely related. This article breaks down how each political issue affects our food.
fast-food globalization
The book Fast Food Nation is a great and entertaining read.
Exporting Diabetes to Asia is a PubMed article about the globalization of fast food.
We Feed the World is an interesting documentary from Austria that goes over the world to show the modern agricultural system.
weight loss drugs
This article thoroughly goes over what weight loss medications are, how they work, who might need them, and their side effects, as well as so much more.
The Mayo Clinic gives a more simplified version of the pros and cons of weight loss drugs.
This article focuses on dangerous diet pills people should avoid.
hw-420 final project
In HW-420 Creating Wellness: Psychological and Spiritual Aspects of Healing, I created a ten question psychological and spiritual inventory to determine someone’s health. I then interviewed a friend with my inventory. Below her answers I explained why I chose that question.
Taking inventory of your thoughts, beliefs, and or emotions is good to do. But it is not always easy. A counselor can help their client with this by creating questionnaires to prompt the client to dig deeper.
